Selecting the Right Water Heater Thermostat
"Be sure you have the right water heater thermostat!"
The water heater thermostat is the programmable temperature control for your unit. Once the wiring is all in place, you can adjust the setting whenever you like. This will have an effect on how hot your heater actually makes the water, and how quickly. Even if you have on demand or instantaneous models, there are slight changes that you can make. Honeywell and Atwood are the most common manufacturers, and they have been doing it for a while. You don’t have to get their thermostats, but they’re who you’re most likely to see.
A lot of people want to know the main differences in controls for all the different applications. They want to know how they differ from an RV, to a suburban (portable), to industrial, to commercial, and to residential. The main way they all differ is the different voltages they operate at, but basically they all use the same basic method. You just have to realize that in industrial and commercial situations, you’re going to be controlling a lot more than you would in a normal home.
With that out of the way, you need to consider whether you have a natural gas or propane model (if there’s a tank, you have one of those). Otherwise, you probably have a tankless electric model. Technically, the same controls can work with both devices, but you’re better off making sure you have the exactly right type. You don’t want to leave any room for errors that would lead to a replacement or expensive repairs, do you? There have been reports of people trying to use the thermostat for a direct vent model on a typical instantaneous model (or point of use) and leaking sure ensues.
When shopping for your temperature controls, don’t be afraid to compare prices. Though you won’t find a lot of difference between the best models and the average ones, it doesn’t hurt to look. Keep your mind out for Titan, Bosch, GE, AO Smith, and Bradford, since they are trying to break into the market. Because of this, they can offer cheap prices.
